HAWAII, MAY 2012

KOLEKOLE BEACH, THE BIG ISLAND:  We drove all over the big island looking at its 11 climate zones.  This was the tropical zone next to this rocky beach.

AKAKA FALLS:  This was an impressive water fall of about 300 feet.  Seth maintained a good pace going up and down the stairs when we made it into a race.  He didn't like it when I beat him up the stairs.  OK next time I will let him win.  It was hard beating him though.

SUGAR CANE:  This is what sugar looks like before it is processed.  This is a farmer's market in Hilo.  It is cheaper to buy vegetables at a farmer's market than at WalMart, where they import their onions from New Zealand.  It was fun chewing on the sugar cane and then spiting out the fibers.  Too bad Seth didn't know where to spit out the fibers.

TURTLE ATTACK:  We stopped at a black sand beach tide pool where 2 turtles resided.  Elaina was walking in the water when one of the turtles bit her.  I screamed, because I had just learned how much turtle bites can hurt.  I yanked Elaina to safety and then realized how dangerous her green shorts were.  Those shorts were the same color as turtle food.

BLACK SAND ON CLOTHS:  You certainly wont miss the sand on your cloths when its black.  There are only 2 black sand beaches in Hawaii.

WHAT'S A LAVA TUBE ABOUT:  We have a book that talks about lava tubes, so we were excited to get to go into this one in Volcano national park.

I GOT MY 45 MINUTES EXERCISE IN:  I had to keep up with my life time wellness challenge which means exercising 45 minutes 5 times a week.  15 minutes here and there while seeing Volcanoes national park did it, as long as you don't mind being stared at.  I'm doing tae boe here.

CHURCH IN HONOLULU:  These trees are what they make leis out of.  Look at all the flowers on the lawn.  It was steak conference that day and this building in Honolulu is almost 100 years old.

THE KO OLINA MARRIOT:  We loved all the jacuzis at our resort and the pools.  It was nice to stay at a nice place, and to be near the Disneyland resort.

THE TEMPLE IN LAIE:  We went to the Polynesian Cultural center and the temple.  Our niece who goes to BYU Hawaii watched our 3 kids so we could go to the temple.

THE END OF THE ROAD:  The road ends here on the  Ko Olina side of Oahu.  It was fun to go where the locals go and swim in a place with big surf and a calm pools.

HANAMA BAY:  I have wondered about this place since I studied calculus with my freshman friend Melodie Fair, who told me about it.  I finally got to go snorkeling there.

ELAINA'S 5th BIRTHDAY:  Elaina turned 5 in Hawaii and we celebrated at the Cheese Cake Factory in Honolulu.

HONOLULU AT NIGHT:  We wondered through the mall and then saw a grassy area, which we walked through into a hotel, which had this view of the beach on the other side of it.  It was very romantic with diamond head in the background.

THE FLOATY-DEAD-MANS-FLOAT:  Don't worry Aubrey (18 months old)  is still alive and loves floating on her back.  She is my only child to do this.  I hope she learns to swim at 2 and a half.

OUR LAST NIGHT IN HAWAII:  We went to the Disney resort for dinner which had cheaper food than our place.  The sunset was beautiful and we had a lovely evening.
